In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Hayes Bicycle Group, of Mequon, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 800 SunRinglé Hollow Quick Release Devices for Bicycles. The quick release devices can unexpectedly fail or break when locked in position on the bicycle, causing the rider to lose control, which poses a serious fall hazard.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Trek Bicycle Corp., of Waterloo, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 49,000 Trek MT220 Girls Bicycles. The bicycle’s frame can break during use, causing the rider to lose control and suffer injuries.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Pacific Cycle Inc., of Madison, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 7,000 InStep “Pathfinder,” Schwinn “Run About,” and Mongoose “Alley Cat” Trailer Bicycles. The coupler connecting the children’s trailer bike to the adult’s bicycle has welds that can fail, posing a fall hazard to children.

Formula Brake USA, of Petaluma, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 5,700 Oro Disc Brakes used on bicycles. The brake’s hand lever can separate, resulting in loss of braking. This can cause the rider to lose control of the bicycle, posing a risk of injury to riders.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 2,700 Bicycles with SW Carbon Stem with Magnesium Faceplate. The bicycle's stem has a magnesium faceplate that holds the handlebar in place. The faceplates on the recalled stems can crack allowing the handlebar to break off the bicycle, posing a serious fall hazard.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Recreational Equipment Inc., of Kent, Wash. is voluntarily recalling about 2,800 Novara Dirt Rider 20-inch 5-speed and 6-speed bicycles. The alloy frame used for these bicycles can be prone to fatigue failure. Frame failure results in the separation of the fork, head tube, and handlebar away from the rest of the bike causing a loss of control and crash, and posing a risk of serious injury to the rider.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Dynacraft BSC Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., has agreed to pay a $1,400,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it violated federal reporting requirements. CPSC alleged that Dynacraft failed, on multiple occasions, to inform the government in a timely manner about a serious defect with their mountain bicycles.

The length of the crank arm in the 2003 model fails to allow sufficient space between the rider's foot and the front wheel, when the front wheel is turned backwards. The rider's foot could come in contact with the front wheel, causing the rider to lose control, fall and possibly suffer serious injury.
