At a Town Hall Meeting held at the Mall of America, U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Acting Chairman Nancy Nord met with parents and consumers to listen to their concerns and talk about safety in the home. Acting Chairman Nord briefed consumers on CPSC’s plan to increase staff to pursue consumer product hazards more aggressively. CPSC will be adding staff across the country, creating a new early warning system, and educating foreign manufacturers about US safety regulations.

Effective today, Nancy Nord assumes the position of Acting Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Ms. Nord was appointed by President George W. Bush to be a Commissioner at CPSC and was sworn into office on May 5, 2005. Her term as Commissioner expires in October 2012.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Hal Stratton today warned holiday season gift buyers to be on the lookout for recently recalled toys and children's products that pose serious safety threats to youngsters. To provide consumers easier access to all recall announcements, Chairman Stratton also announced the launch of a new federal government inter-agency Web site -- www.Recalls.gov.

Hal Stratton was confirmed yesterday as the eighth Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). He heads the federal agency responsible for protecting the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products. President George W. Bush nominated Mr. Stratton to be CPSC Chairman and the U.S. Senate confirmed him on July 25, 2002. He will serve a term that expires in October of 2006.

Thomas Hill Moore today became Acting Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Mr. Moore, who has served as a commissioner at CPSC since 1995, said, "I came to CPSC, in part, because of my admiration for the hard work and zeal of its Chairman, Ann Brown (who resigned November 1). The agency is a better place for having had her extraordinarily talented stewardship. I will miss her and wish her well in her new endeavors."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Chairman Ann Brown has awarded the Chairman's Commendation to Gerber Products Company, an affiliate of the Novartis Group, for their long-time support of the Baby Safety Shower Program and other safety initiatives. Since the program was launched in 1995, communities around the U.S. have held "baby safety showers" and distributed more than 600,000 safety checklists and how-to kits in English and Spanish.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Ann Brown today announced that a nine-month-old baby girl of Baltimore recently died in a bath ring. A caregiver was bathing the little girl and another child when the caregiver left for a few minutes to check on a noise in another room. She returned to find that the baby, who had slid under the ring, drowned in the bath water. Since 1989 CPSC has received 17 reports, including this most recent death, that children between 5 and 12 months of age drowned in bath seats and rings.
